Support +972, a critical anti-occupation voice in Israel-Palestine

JVL Introduction

If you want to follow developments in Israel-Palestine there is nothing to beat +972 Magazine which reports independently and fearlessly on developments in the region.

Below is a New Year appeal for support from one of its Journalists.

You can see details of its team of 25 here; and subscribe to its free weekly newletter here.

But, above all, donate! And, in the UK, you can give gift-aided support through the British Shalom Salaam Trust.

Yuval Abraham | +972 and Local Call writer

Dear friend,

As a Jewish Israeli activist in the West Bank, I am regularly exposed to the injustices of the Israeli occupation. Time after time, I am taken aback by the enormous gap between what I see on the ground and how the media — both in Israel and around the world — chooses to report the events. Most newspapers don’t seem to care about what is happening to Palestinians living under unbearable conditions in Gaza, Shuafat Refugee Camp, or the unrecognized villages in the South Hebron Hills.

It is my responsibility to bridge that gap. As a Jew who speaks Hebrew, English, and Arabic, and who can move freely across the country, I try to use my privilege to expose the mechanisms of oppression in our country, whether it’s by documenting the demolition of a Palestinian family’s home in Jerusalem or speaking to refugees in Jenin. +972 and Local Call are the only places I can do this, out of a commitment to justice, while reaching both an Israeli and an international audience.

As a journalist, I am especially proud of the investigative reports we have published this year, which have had a dramatic impact on public discourse around the world: from exposing the joint settler-soldier militias that attacked West Bank villages and killed four Palestinians on a single day in May, through revealing the classified Shin Bet document that tried — and failed — to convince European governments to stop funding Palestinian human rights groups.

For me, writing is a form of release — a way to deal with the trauma and violence of this kind of work and channel it into political change. I am proud to be part of a team of inspiring journalists, Palestinians and Israelis, who come from different places between the river and the sea. This reflects the future vision I believe in for Israel-Palestine.

Your personal support — whether as a member who helps us sustain our work and plan ahead, or with a one-time donation — has a huge impact on the kind of work I can do in the field. Can I count on your support? If you’re already a member — thank you, and I would be grateful if you could think of friends or family members who might want to support us as well.

Thank you and Happy New Year,
Yuval Abraham

This appeal is one that should absolutely be responded to!– even though the demands on us financially with the legal cases are not inconsiderable at the present time.

Yes, please please do support +972, if possible with a regular donation (no matter it isnt very big). +972 has no paywall – you can sign up for an emailed version of all its new articles for free – but it needs donors to keep its hugely creative, thoughtful, professional and very brave operation going. The British Shalom-Salaam Trust (bsst.org.uk) is a long time supporter, and we also help by passing on donations (+ Gift Aid) from individual donors.

REPLYING TO JOE W about BSST security:
Thank you for your concern. However, there is nothing to worry about – no donors’ confidential information (e.g. passwords/credit card details etc) is at risk. As with many charities, BSST’s donation process takes would-be donors direct to CAF Bank (Charities Aid Foundation), so donors’ details are held within a very secure system. As far as the rest of our site is concerned, it would be extremely annoying if someone hacked in and replaced all our pages with pictures of squirrels – or speeches by Keir Starmer, or even BJ – but we are very transparent and nothing confidential would be revealed or lost. Nevertheless, we are aware that our site is less than ideal and are investigating setting it up with https protection.
