Care4Calais writes

The Rwanda plan won’t end small boat crossings. Expensive deals with France to increase border controls won’t stop people smugglers. And neither will keep vulnerable refugees safe.

There is another – kinder, safer, more effective – option.

A lot of Tory bosses are now saying let these economic migrants in because the cost of unskilled labour is rising.

On reading David Gimour’s “Dispossessed: Ordeal of Palestinians” I was struck by Arab’s resistance to Zionist immigration greatly increased by Hitler & later the USA. Clearly, vulnerable people fleeing illegal war invasions by boat need protection and care. The super-rich buying up UK land and property, & corporates utilities, banks don’t get hostile scapegoating as do those whose only option is the life-risking dingy. Clearly this fits a twisted, racially divisive, proto-fascist agenda. What troubles me is the way an impoverished, needy English constituency, too often is left out of the picture, fueling division also. I wish there was more linkage of different issues little seen within the Left nor Liberal media eg battered women unable to get a place in a refuge with refugees, both fleeing for their lives, could be more mutually supportive. With increasing demand for affordable housing, council sell-offs, rising rents & evictions surely we need more unity and push-back against sexist racist hate? These issues trouble me especially as I’ve experienced extreme sadistic and twisted hostility from young men where only race and class seem to connect. This plays into Italian Georgio Meloni’s playbook. How do we best overcome racial, gender, class division in a more linked up way please? Genuine question to the more politically experienced who, as sympathetic to Corbyn, I hope will be received with the good intentions aimed at. All the Best

A visa system seems like a very sensible idea – PROVIDED the criteria adopted to qualify as an ‘asylum seeker’, the evidence required to validate a visa-based claim, and the competence and empathy of the visa-scrutiny staff can be ensured. But we also know that a proportion of those crossing the Channel in small boats comprises people fleeing extreme poverty and seeking a better life. Just like my family (who, yes, were fleeing antisemitism too, but mostly wanted to escape from never-ending Lithuanian-Jewish poverty) and probably most of those Jews who came here in the second half of the nineteenth century.
