Silent Knight

Part of a cartoon by Steve Bell published in the Guardian in Ocober 2020

Dear Keir,

Please listen to a carol parody that I have sung for you, written by Deborah Maccoby, who like myself, is Jewish. It is not the most professional recording (I do not have the equipment and we did not have time to organise it properly before Epiphany), but I hope you appreciate it….

The words are below.

Yours in disappointment,

Deborah Fink

You can listen to a recording of the carol here.

SILENT KNIGHT

Silent Knight,
Unholy Knight,
Starmer backs
Might, not right,
Goes along with Israeli pretence
That a genocide is self-defence.
We want justice and peace;
We want justice and peace.

Silent Knight,
Illegal Knight,
What a most
Shameful sight.
Dubbed Sir Keir for his service to laws;
Backs a “humanitarian pause”;
We want justice and peace,
We want justice and peace.

Silent Knight,
Unholy Knight,
Starmer, see
Gaza’s plight.
See her sunk in a genocide mire;
Call for full and for instant ceasefire;
Speak for justice and peace,
Speak out for justice and peace.

Deborah Maccoby. January 2024

    How apt for 12th Night. Well done both Deborah’s, you have shown the essence of how Keir has responded to the crisis. I wonder if he has a conscience.

    Thank you, Deborah ‘M’ and Deborah ‘F’ for your thoughtful parody of ‘Silent (K)Night’. Sadly I don’t suppose Starmer will read and listen to it but that is less important than those who do and who support the sentiments. Even if you don’t write a comment please make an acknowledgement of supporting Peace for Gaza and a permanent cease fire so that Starmer can see the strength of feeling coming from Labour members against his support for Israel and lack of humanity for the Palestinians who are being driven from their land. Coming up to an election this year he needs to ‘hear’ what people are asking for from a Labour Leader and either change some of his thinking and reliance on Sunak’s policies or stand down for the sake of the Labour Party, who can then elect a genuine leader who upholds the original values of the Party.

    A very poignant and beautiful rendition. Thank you for creating this. I hope it speaks to many. Have you tried contacting Woman’s Hour (BBC Radio 4) with this to help spread the word?

    I find it hard to believe his constituents will vote for him.. surely he was voted in while he was still in disguise as a LW Humanitarian.. He’s shown his true colours as a RW genocide enabler & his sabotage of Labour and hidden dirty funding have been discovered..

    Our democracy exists in name only, its about as functional as our free press, Starmer is a plant, look at his funders and apologists
    It costs £20k to stand in a GE, the biggest challenge is to organise a single independent candidate against the Tories, Red or Blue
    The carrot for Lib Dems and Greens is PR

    If he and JC were around in the 30’s I’m pretty certain which one of them would have risked life and limb and imprisonment at Cable Street. Veteran anti-fascists, back in the 70’s, assured me that that is the only way to stop them. I found this uncomfortable, but now I realise if these thugs achieve their goals in the street, scores of empty, scumbag politicians will scuttle to the extreme right to benefit from their support. We all know who they are. We may have ended up speaking German. We may well have ended up having no Jewish people in the UK. And it was prevented. Not the likes of the loathesome Starmer. Because of the likes of Jeremy Corbyn. I really don’t have words for Starmer.

    Thanks for the kind comments. Phillipa, nice idea about Women’s Hour but it’s not very timely now Christmas is over. Maybe next time.
    Meanwhile, here’s my fundraiser for Gaza.
