JVL Introduction

Amidst so much media misreporting, distortion and propaganda – brilliantly taken apart by Michael Walker in Novara Media’s “The Media’s Israel Palestine Misinformation War” – there are occasional gems.

Al Jazeera stands out and its regular programme Inside Story has often been superb.

There is a wonderful interview on Sky News with Katy Colley from Hastings on the demonstration in London on 14th October.

And David Hearst’s Double Down News programme, “Israel & The Myth of ‘Self Defence'” is also essential viewing.

  • Adolf Starmer calls himself a human rights lawyer, he’s nothing but an enabler of murder.

Watched this several times and shall watch it again — I’ve sent the link to everyone I know. I was very moved by it in the end because in its unsentimental, cleareyed and fully reasoned way it is ultimately very moving. It’s also a warning from history. A friend of mine once said to me, ‘We Jews have got ourselves a criminal state.’ It didn’t have to be this way and should not have been. Even at this stage it’s not too late to redeem something of what we were mandated to be, ‘A light unto the nations’. Right now that light is very dim indeed and, to quote Michael Tippett (in A Child of Our Time), the world turns on its dark side. Can Israel change for the better? Can a too Israelocentric Judaism rediscover its spiritual meanings? Perhaps it lost its way after the European Judeocide and thought it had found in the conquest of land the only god it could trust? Personally I’m an atheist but I can still see that aspirations to something greater and more lasting than ourselves gives us meaning, and if that’s some kind of Jewish revival of a spiritual transcendence with supernatural edges to it, I would respect and welcome it. But dispossession of another people through violent conquest, the continuation of their oppression and persecution through racist apartheid, that wont bring to us Jews peace, security, contentment and certainly not happiness.
