Visualizing Palestine

Israel's closure of Gaza started long before the blockade began in 2007

JVL Introduction

Visualizing Palestine (VP) has been producing visuals trying to bring home the reality of the situation in Palestine for over a decade.

We repost below the most recent six images from the VP stable. High-resolution versions of them are available on their website.

A description of the project

Visualizing Palestine (VP) was established in 2012, and is dedicated to using data and research to visually communicate Palestinian experiences to provoke narrative change. VP envisions a liberated future for Palestinians in a world free from oppression.

The underlying rationale

Visualizing Palestine’s theory of change is centered on narrative change. We believe that dominant narratives serve to obscure, justify, and perpetuate oppressive power structures in society. Visualizing Palestine is dedicated to creating narrative interventions that shift these power dynamics, making Palestinian narratives more visible, widely accessible, and powerful as part of wider anti-colonial and anti-racist narratives.

Visualizing Palestine’s work is possible because of a community of members committed to making narrative change.

VP members are people who make a recurring monthly or annual contribution to VP, of any amount. This community-funded model enables us to effectively communicate about the root causes of injustice and plan resources for future growth.

Visualizing Palestine utilizes Creative Commons licensing, allowing for free use and distribution of our resources. The only currency we ask is data on their use, which helps our team better understand how to improve.

Six Wars Old: Israel’s repeated military assaults on Gaza have devastating consequences for children. Israel is not only killing Palestinian children at astonishing rates, but also killing the childhood of those who survive.

Zero Accountability: We updated the figures on this visual, but due to the collapse of health and communication systems in Gaza, the Ministry of Health (MOH) hasn’t been able to provide comprehensive updates on the number of Palestinians killed beyond November 22. The true number of people killed is likely to be much higher.

Treating Trauma: This is the third update of this visual, which is a tribute to heroic health workers in Gaza, who are paying an unbearable price to save as many people as possible under impossible circumstances during this ongoing genocide. The figures in this visual date to November 22, as the collapse of the health system makes it difficult to obtain regular updates.

Families in Gaza: Hundreds of Palestinian families in Gaza have lost multiple members to indiscriminate Israeli bombardment, while numerous families have been entirely wiped off the registry.

No War, No Warming: The consequences of repetitive, U.S.-backed Israeli bombardments of Gaza over the years, and especially over the past two months, draw attention to the role of militarism in multiple crises.

Killing the Story: In 57 days, Israeli forces have killed 65 journalists, making it the deadliest period for journalists since the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) started documenting fatalities in 1993.
