Three Gaza-related videos

JVL Introduction

We link below to three interesting videos:

  • David Hearst talking about British citizens fighting in the Israeli Defence Force, raising serious issues of double standards in how those fighting in other foreign wars are treated.
  • An Al Jazeera Listening Post programme, chronicling the grim reality of the war and the grim images it is producing; the assault on journalists in the Strip; and looking at what is happening to Palestinian citizens of Israel and the clampdown on free speech there.
  • An interview by Owen Jones with Paul Rogers, Emeritus Professor of Peace Studies at Bradford University, arguing why Israel cannot win this war.

British Israelis fighting in Gaza a threat to UK law

“Is it right to take no action against Britons who justify war crimes while prosecuting Palestinians for hate speech?” David Hearst, Middle East Eye editor in chief, argues that letting British Israelis fight in Gaza is a threat to the UK’s rule of law

Trauma and terror: What we are seeing from Gaza

16 December 2023

Two months of war have produced a mountain of grim images from Gaza. Plus, the screws are tightening on Palestinian Israelis.

A supporter comments:

Excellent survey of the media landscape in Israel especially from an Israeli-Palestinian perspective (what it’s like to be a Palestinian in Israeli post Oct 7th).  Also with reference to mainstream media in UK, USA and other countries where corporate media is directed towards pleasing (or not displeasing) corporate sponsors and other interested wealthy parties.

If you don’t have time to watch the whole half hour programme, do try to watch from about 15 minutes in, about one courageous Palestinian journalist and former TV host in Israel.  He describes the racism and the naked threats (including threats to kill) now on Israeli everyday television news and talk shows.

Paul Rogers is Emeritus Professor of Peace Studies and one of the world’s leading experts on war. This is a devastating interview which draws on what’s happening on the ground and other precedents – like Iraq and Afghanistan – which exposes why Israel cannot win this.

I found David Hearst’s piece on the legality of British and British-Israeli dual nationality citizens fighting in order representing Israel interesting. In 1967 I was a student at Manchester University when the “Six-Day War” broke out. Along with many other Jewish students – I’m ashamed now to admit it – I went to the Jewish “chaplaincy”, Hillel House, to enlist in the Israeli army. I wasn’t the only one. I don’t remember how word got around that they were accepting volunteers, but there were plenty of them.
Most of the volunteers were put to work on kibbutzim, replacing the labour lost by the call-up of reservists. I imagine very few were given military roles, though one of the group I was in, a lorry driver, was taken off the kibbutz to drive supplies to the IDF.
The fact that this recruitment operation could function openly and without opposition demonstrates the point David Hearst makes.
