The wrong sort of Jew – a crowdfunder

JVL Introduction

We’d like to draw to your attention to this project, already quite advanced, to produce a play about “the wrong sort of Jew”.

It is a reality we in Jewish Voice for Labour are all too familiar with, and many of our members have been interviewed as part of it.

Theatre venues have not exactly been rushing forward to offer their encouragement and support, but those who conceived it are determined to press ahead.

This crowdfunder has  specific objective, to enable a partial staging of the play in early spring, with a view to a bigger production to follow.

We urge you to give whatever support you can. Please donate

The Wrong Sort of Jew

Weʼre raising £5,000 to fund a play based on interviews with Jewish members of the Labour Party most of whom have been maliciously accused of antisemitism.

Let them speak: the life histories and present experiences of non-Zionist, Labour Party Jews.

“Somebody had been trawling my Facebook. They decided to pick on fourteen posts. Mostly against the Israeli government. And in four of them I actually give my background. I come from a family that escaped from the pogroms, that grew up a hundred percent Jewish. My mum fought against Mosley’s blackshirts. It’s like a white person saying to a black anti-apartheid activist, you’re a racist, you’re being racist against black people. You with me?”

The emotional testimony, with its echoes of Kafka and The Crucible, has been edited into a powerful theatre script by John Graham Davies and Farhana Sheikh. The production (directed by Hilary Westlake) will be a dramatic illustration of the issues subsequently thrown up by Al Jazeera’s The Labour Files, and by the Labour Party’s own Forde Report. More than that, it dramatises the histories that have shaped Jewish socialists and fuelled their commitments.

Despite blanket opposition or fearful silence from theatre venues regarding this important theatre project, the team behind it are determined that the voices of these non-Zionist Jews are heard. A partial staging of the play is now planned for early spring, with a view to a bigger production to follow – but money is needed.

The highly experienced writers, director and professional actors are giving their time in solidarity, but we need to cover the costs of editing the filmed material, and of hiring the spring venue so that audiences can see it.

Since starting the project, two of the interviewees, both elderly Jewish socialists with long histories of anti-fascist, anti-apartheid and pro-Palestine activity behind them, have died. They died trying to clear their names.

Because Corbyn was being so vilified, both myself and my late husband thought we should join in order to try and defend him. As Jews, rebels against the Zionist movement, we felt we could actually contribute to this.

We now know the extent of deceit used to undermine the movement around Jeremy Corbyn. The Wrong Sort of Jew shows how that purge worked, and the extent of the human cost for those targeted as being the wrong sort of Jew.

Please give if you can, and circulate.

As a playwright and ex-Labour member, I support this project with all my heart. I will make a donation – I’m not wealthy, I wish it could be more – and hope that one day soon I will sit in the audience and watch this play. Because Life makes the best Theatre, and telling the truth in a world of lies is more vital than ever.

Have you tried applying to the Arts Council for funding? Let me have a think about possible venues for the show. One might be Teatro Technis in Crowndale Road, almost opposite Starmer’s LP Office? They hosted Jackie Walker’s The Lynching a couple of years back. Otherwise, you could find a ‘found space’ – in a warehouse, old factory etc….

I’m sorry John, I’m not with you. My skin colour may be white but my family are multi- ethnic mongrels; my dad gypsy, my sister’s skin colour is black. so too the mother of my son. I believe that BLM is a racist movement & actively discriminates against white working class. The struggle for equality is a class issue, not racial, however much the Guardian may preach otherwise.

If this purge, reminiscent of Stalinist USSR, were not actually happening it would be beyond even the wit of Lewis Carol. I hope your playwright has a good sense of humour because ridicule is a very effective instrument in exposing the absurdity of Labour Party expulsions. It would be really funny if it weren’t so serious. Good Luck to everyone – you deserve it.

Islington North and JC should host it, get the invites out to the great and the good
Invite the the most notorious AS Scammers, name and shame them in the play, with Al Jazeera behind you, work their legal department to get the protection you need, ask them to record it for you during rehearsals and put out in a special programme, they will cover your opening night live
Use all Left wing media to create a Twitter storm, any attempt to stop you this time will be free publicity
Keep key information on a need to know basis
    Break a leg

For the venue look at ‘Little Theatres’ they are fiercely independent and therefore harder to intimidate
