How to defy apartness

The word “apartness” is today most often uttered in its Afrikaans form, invoking memories of an archaic ideology and a tyrannical regime. But while the term was made infamous in South Africa, for more than a decade, it has rightly become synonymous with Palestine-Israel. As a philosophy, apartness preached that different racial groups should be kept separate from one another and governed under a strict hierarchy. A powerful state apparatus was built to enforce this worldview, ensuring that the racial groups remained divided — and for the racial underclass, also splintered from within — through an array of legal statuses, economic policies, and brute force.

Journalism against apartheid

For eight decades, “apartness” has been the central principle organizing politics and society between the river and the sea. Today, it is aggressively promoted and enforced under Israeli rule on both sides of the Green Line, dictating how we experience our living spaces, our schools, our relationships, and more. Even in our political discourse, we are told to envision ourselves as inevitably separate and unequal: to belong to either a “Jewish” or “Palestinian” state, with the former holding superior power; to live in segregated localities, with Jewish towns entitled to more resources; and to embrace the right of Jews to freely immigrate to the land, but not Palestinian refugees.

+972 Magazine embodies the antithesis of that philosophy. As a group of Palestinian and Israeli journalists, we are defying the separationist and supremacist ideals that we have long been told to abide by.

We instead dedicate our energy to challenging the narratives and institutions that uphold this racist paradigm, and to envision a more just and equitable one. Will you support our mission by becoming a member of +972, with a recurring monthly contribution to keep us going for the struggle ahead?

Israel’s incoming far-right government is set to take this ideology to grotesque levels. The new “National Security Ministry,” headed by Itamar Ben Gvir, plans to further empower the police to suppress Palestinian citizens, especially in so-called “mixed cities,” as a violent buffer in service of Jewish citizens. The returning prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, will likely continue his coalitions’ enactment of laws that further enshrine discrimination and annexation, building on the spirit of the Jewish Nation-State Law. These are hardly novel policies for a regime that has always made racial superiority its raison d’etre, but they are harbingers of the darker future that the far right may yet bring.

In the face of this clear and present danger, the partnership that binds +972 is not based on a shallow idea of “coexistence” that ignores our asymmetries. Rather, we recognize the hierarchy of privileges imposed on us, and actively work to undo it. We do so by prioritizing the voices of the most marginalized, calling out agents of state power, and challenging the public narratives that justify the violent status quo. In so doing, we not only bring together the views of Palestinians ranging from Masafer Yatta to New York, but also have them converse with racial, gender, and class issues inside Israel to promote a holistic struggle against oppression.

Because of this, +972 provides a unique model for how journalism can be instrumental in fighting apartheid in Palestine-Israel. But that model cannot survive without your support.

By becoming a member of +972 with a monthly donation, you will help ensure that we continue to bring the stories that expose the reality on the ground, elevate the voices of those most affected by it, and partner with other media outlets to reshape the mainstream conversation. • Noel Hamel says:

Once Palestinians and Jews lived amicably in Palestine as Semitic tribes with the same root. It is Israelis who believe themselves separate and superior, with entitlements including behaviour to harm their ancestral twins.
