Naomi Wimborne-Idrissi is elected to Labour’s NEC

Naomi Wimborne Idrissi with the RMT's Mick Lynch supporting striking postal workers

We are delighted that our Media Officer, Naomi Wimborne-Idrissi, has been elected to Labour’s National Executive Committee.

Naomi stood on the GrassRoots5 slate, backed by 13 left organisations including JVL. We congratulate the three other members of the slate, Jess Barnard, Gemma Bolton and Yasmine Dar on their election, but regret that Mish Rahman sadly didn’t get re-elected. We thank everyone who voted for the GrassRoots5. The coalition of 13 groups worked very well together and we hope there is scope for more collaboration in the future.

Naomi’s phenomenal campaigning activities, focusing on the issues facing working class people, and her solid support for striking workers, filled social media with energy and enthusiasm. JVL’s reputation for defending members’ rights and for opposing all forms of racism will also have been a factor in her favour for many of those members who have not been expelled or suspended or left in despair.

The hard work begins now. Naomi and her CLP and trade union comrades on the NEC will have a fight on their hands defending the left wing policies that had won so much support. As she argued throughout the campaign, radical measures are needed to end the cost of living crisis and defend workers’ rights and living standards. There’s also a job of work to be done to resist the divisions that are being propagated by the Tories and, regrettably, by some amongst the Leadership of the Labour Party. That will mean continuing to make the case for a democratic party that values its members and respects their right to freedom of expression.

I know Naomi is made of stern stuff but the full vitriol from the right and especially the Jewish right has been unleashed and she will need all our support.

The hatred stirred up by fanatical Zionists and those who support them is off the scale. Naomi will have her work cut out fending off these vile attacks. Nor will the PLP under Starmer come to her aid. If anything they will plot against her, as they did with Corbyn. They won’t be satisfied until they have driven her out. The left will never get a fair hearing unless and until we succeed in remaking society along a socialist model.

A very pleasing result. A rebuke to the Momentum leaders who refused to endorse Naomi’s candidature. The instant denunciation of the result from the Jewish Labour Movement, Board of Deputies and their entire stage army speaks volumes. A vote is a vote is a vote!

Congratulations Naomi. You are a courageous socialist beacon who has resisted the smears from pro Israeli state individuals and their organisations inside the Labour Party.

Great to see you continue how you mean to go on defending ordinary people’s interests alongside Mick Lynch.

    In solidarity

Well done Naomi. Continue to be the well-infolrmed, articulate still small voice of calm that defends the rights of Palestinians against the outrageous unequivocal support for their oppressors promoted by the ‘centrists.’

Don’t know where she finds the energy, the sheer spunk in fighting on when so many others would have given up. Thank you Naomi. I was finally able to cast a vote which meant something – including for the others on the slate.

The election of Naomi Wimborne-Idrissi to the NEC is great news for all socialists and anti-racists.
The hysterical reaction from the JLM and the right wing says more about them than it does about us.
Naomi represents the best of our class.
That’s why the zionist right wing attack her so strongly.
I’m sure that she will not have under-estimated the strength of the forces that will seek to undermine her.
She will need all our support in the months ahead.
Solidarity with all the grassroots representatives on the NEC.

Congratulations, Naomi. You and the rest of the JVL are the best of us.

As would be expected, as soon as you were elected the pile-on from the usual suspects started.

Stay strong against the haters. You are not alone.

There’s a small group of “bonny fighters” of all ages who can and will support each other, I hope, against the unrelenting pressures they’ll almost certainly face. Wishing you all good luck, good discernment, toughness and resilience.

Wonderful news Naomi. Its so great that you keep on fighting amidst a sea of hate and lies. I am sure you will make a change to the NEC with your 3 other colleagues that will be for the greater good. I am sorry I was not able to vote for you but I wish you all the very best in your continued journey towards justice and truth as I also continue on mine!

The anger and hatred provoked by this marvellous election result is a sign of fear…… fear that Zionist control over the Labour Party has been weakened. It is also an indication of how little the Board of Deputies and the various Israeli front organisations within Britain care about democracy and freedom of speech. Rather than fighting for peace and social justice in Britain, their priority is to protect a morally corrupt and racist society in Israel . Naomi’s election has exposed their true nature.

This is a moment for celebration – that someone who is honest and brave has been recognised and acknowledged by ordinary men and women in the Labour Party. Thank you, Naomi, and all you colleagues at JVL

Many congratulations. I applaud your determination to keep fighting for the soul of the Labour party. Your decency and compassion should be heeded by those who attack you: they have a lot to learn. Well done, Naomi. Good luck.

So pleased! As the PLP are teaching us all – democracy and freedom of expression can never be taken for granted but have to be enacted. Keir Starmer might say that he supports the right to strike but his actions undermine that assurance no matter how emphatically expressed: Forbidding/dissuading members of his shadow cabinet from joining workers on the picket line in solidarity, sacking Sam Tarry.

Meanwhile, Starmer’s non-response to the Forde Report clearly doesn’t help put right the just grievances it’s brought to light. Which makes laughable his assertion that Labour’s proper role in government is to ‘resolve disputes,’ not join picket lines. If talking is key, why has he mired the Forde report in silence? Why not even a whisper of bringing together the relevant parties/ affiliated groups, left and right wings of the Party round the table? Isn’t the insidious factionalism of some, worthy of the discussion of all?

Afraid perhaps of publicly saying the words “Labour” and “antisemitism” in the same sentence, Starmer is shamefully abandoning to silence the victims of multifarious abuse, racism and sexism highlighted in the Forde Report. It leaves the unsavory impression that whilst some in the party are free to express whatever vulgarities come to them, others are under pressure to hold their tongue in their appeal for justice and equality.

Now more than ever given this time of sky high inflation and low wages, having Naomi on the NEC (as well as Gemma Bolton, Yasmine Dar & Jessica Barnard) offers a beacon of hope for the Left, in Labour. For if the Tories anti-Union agenda wasn’t bad enough, Starmer’s wholly inadequate reiterations on ‘supporting’ worker’s right to strike almost threatens to bring into social contention what should surely go without saying in a democracy (contrarily, he seems anxious to prevent any such opening for more transparent dispute/disagreement around the clearly vexed subject of antisemitism).
