Seven Jewish Children read by Seven Jewish Germans

7 Jewish Germans reading 7 Jewish Children

JVL Introduction

JVL is pleased to share this superb response by our German partners, Judische Stimmer fur Gerechten Frieden in Nahost, to the cancellation in Germany of a lifetime achievement award for playwright Caryl Churchill because of her support for BDS, and also because her play Seven Jewish Children was cited as evidence of antisemitism. Judische Stimmer’s response:  seven German Jews reading the play. It is powerful and moving.

Seven Jewish Children by Caryl Churchill

When the European Drama Prize was removed from recipient Caryl Churchil on unfounded but loud allegations of antisemitism for writing the short play “Seven Jewish Children” Artists for Palestine wrote to demand its reinstatement;  more than 170 artists signed.  This reading is the response from Judische Stimme, who said:

This reading by members of Jewish Voice for a Just Peace in the Middle East (Jüdische Stimme) is in solidarity with Caryl Churchill. After she was chosen to receive the European Playwrights’ Award, the jury’s decision was revoked on account of her record of supporting Palestinian human rights. We protest against this shameful stigmatisation of Palestinians and all who show solidarity with them, and reject the idea that this play, a subtle and emotional response to the bombing of Gaza and the deaths of some 300 Palestinian children in 2008/9, is in any way antisemitic.”

We were marching, marching against Tony Blair’s war, maybe two millions of us, along the Embankment, three people walking behind us, Palestinians, I overheard one say “Now the British are marching perhaps they will do something” I felt proud that we were going to make a difference, we carried on walking and trusting in our numbers but no difference came. We were ignored.
