Greater Manchester JVL/Labour Black Socialists: statement on Israel/Palestine

Statement on Israel/Palestine by Greater Manchester Jewish Voice for Labour and Labour Black Socialists

We stand resolutely in solidarity with the Palestinian people who have been under a merciless bombardment in Gaza, and who in the occupied territories and Jerusalem have been subjected to pogroms by groups of fascist thugs aided and abetted by the security forces of the Israeli state.

The United States government is complicit in these murderous crimes against humanity by funding the State of Israel with three billion dollars of military aid annually, while stating that Israel has the right to defend itself.  We  remind our own government and corporate media, which inanely parrot the clichés of US  and Israeli propaganda, that under international law it is the Palestinian people who have a right to resist the illegal occupation of their lands and the continuing theft of Palestinian property sanctified by the corrupt judiciary of the apartheid Israeli state. It was the exercise of this fundamental right by Palestinians to protest in solidarity against the ethnic cleansing in Sheikh Jarrah which sparked the current brutal escalation of colonial violence.

We welcome the call from the Socialist Campaign Group of MPs for Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions against Israel. The British government must introduce sanctions against Israel, including blocking all trade, and in particular all trade in arms.

We also reject the disingenuous “civil war” narrative which erases the colonial context in which violence against Palestinians takes place and the colossal disparity in the balance of power. The reality is one of settler colonial brutality, state-sanctioned violence, and pogroms by Jewish supremacist groups, backed by the state, against unarmed or ill equipped Palestinians resisting erasure as a people.

A powerful statement. Well done. Solidarity.

  • Richard Purdie says:

Good. But self interest will override any pretence of humanitarian concern by the Tory government. On the other hand, dock workers in Livorno, Italy and Durban, South Africa have applied BDS in a powerful and inspirational manner.
    Long live Palestine! 🇵🇸🇵🇸🇵🇸🇵🇸

Right on! As we used to say. proud to be a member of the Manchester Branch.

  • DJ says:

Good stuff. We should support the right of the colonised to defend themselves from the violence of the coloniser. A concerted campaign against any links between the UK and the rogue state of Israel is the way forward. Support the BDS movement and stand up against those who accuse supporters of Palestinian justice of antisemitism.
